David Allen Atkins was born October 28, 1937 in Saint Paul, Minnesota the son of Elby and Bertha (Canniff) Atkins. Dave graduated from Sibley High School, Class of 1956. While in high school he met Barbara LaRoche at a local five and dime store in St. Paul. They fell in love and following high school they were united in marriage. Dave proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was stationed in Panama from 1957 until his discharge in 1959. While living in Panama, he and Barbara were blessed with the birth of their first child, Jeff. Sadly, Jeff passed away during their time in Panama. Following his honorable discharge, they moved back to Minnesota where they made their home in South St. Paul, Inver Grove Heights and later Wyoming, Minnesota. Dave worked in sales for many years before he and his brother, built Atkins Sporting Goods Store in Wyoming. Together they operated the business until the late 1970’s when they sold it and Dave returned to sales. His beloved Barbara died in 1983 following complications from diabetes. He later met Carol Petra and they were married for close to 30 years. Dave was a very active individual. He loved walking and looked forward to his daily 8-10 miles walks in the community. He enjoyed visiting and being around people and the walks gave him the opportunity to do just that. During the cold Minnesota winters, he would spend months in Marco Island, Florida where his walking shoes would not rest. He would easily walk 13 miles in the Florida sunshine each day. When not walking he would partake in saltwater fishing (Snook and Tarpon were favorites), freshwater fishing in Minnesota (walleye and bass), golfing, playing cards and woodworking. He enjoyed happy hour, walleye at Stellas, his cold bottles of Pepsi and his favorite sliders at White Castle. Dave suffered a stroke in January 2020 and his health began to decline shortly after. He was blessed to be at home with his family surrounding him when he left his world to join his family in heaven on Sunday, July 12, 2020. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elby and Bertha Atkins; son, Jeffrey; wife, Barbara; four siblings. He is survived by his children, Kim (Loren) Kuhnly, Linda (Larry Roberts) Hill, Judy (Bill) Straub, Tom Atkins; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; former spouse, Carol Atkins and her family; nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, August 15, 2020 from 1:00-5:00 p.m. at the American Legion Post 225, 355 West Broadway Avenue, Forest Lake. Private family graveside service at Wyoming United Methodist Cemetery.
