Ronald J. Geerdes
Ronald J. Geerdes was born June 19, 1934, in George, Iowa, to Chris and Janet Geerdes. He grew up on farms in northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota, learning the value of hard work early in life.
Ron proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, stationed in Maine and spending time in Puerto Rico aboard a B-52. An electrician and purchasing agent, he also worked installing intercom systems in health care facilities. Following retirement, he drove school bus for the Forest Lake School District, taking great pride in keeping his bus meticulously clean. Ron was never one to be idle—he was very active and worked from morning until night, always finding something to do.
An adventurous spirit, Ron loved skiing—water skiing in the summer and snow skiing in the winter. His passion for speed and noise extended to riding motorcycles, collecting old tractors, and, most of all, flying his own airplane—his greatest love. At just 18 years old, he achieved his dream of owning his first airplane, sparking a lifelong passion for aviation.
He is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 56 years, Sue; sisters, Norma, Carol, and Lois; brother, Russ; sisters-in-law, Nancy and Joanne; nieces; nephews; along with other relatives and friends.
If you knew Ron, you can be sure he is now up there polishing and shining those “pearly gates.”
The family extends a special thank you to all who supported them during this journey. A heartfelt thank you to Nancy and Joanne for their care and help since Ron’s first stroke; to Lois for keeping Ron’s side of the family so well informed; and to Harlow Grimes for his woodworking skills and the gift of crafting Ron’s urn.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at Mattson Funeral Home, 343 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake, MN. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Private family interment will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
