Paul H. Schwappach, age 76, of Maplewood, Minnesota, died on Monday, June 23, 2025.
Born on June 6, 1949, in Minneapolis, Paul was the son of Chris and Eileen (Healey) Schwappach. He grew up in a loving family and graduated from Benilde-St. Margaret's before pursuing further education in Minnesota. A proud patriot, Paul answered the call to serve and was honorably discharged after his time in the United States Army.
After returning home, Paul began a lifelong career in the asphalt industry. He spent his early years working as a rock crusher with Bituminous Roadway, where he developed a deep knowledge of the trade through hard work and determination. Over time, his leadership and reliability earned him the role of foreman, a position he held for over 25 years. He later retired from Frattallone Paving. Though he officially retired in 2008, Paul’s strong work ethic drew him back into the industry during the winters he and Rene spent in Texas, where he continued to lend his expertise for another seven years before returning home to Minnesota to be closer to family.
Paul and Rene were married on February 3, 2001, in Anoka County, beginning a beautiful chapter of companionship and shared adventures. In his free time, Paul found joy in the outdoors, especially bird hunting with his loyal hunting dogs. He was also a master of the smoker—his legendary ribs were a point of pride and a gift to all who gathered around his table. No restaurant could ever compare.
Paul was a kind, gentle soul—a quiet man whose actions always spoke louder than words. He was deeply devoted to his family and will be profoundly missed by all who were lucky enough to know him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Chris and Eileen; and his siblings, John, Dave, and Mary.
Paul leaves behind his beloved wife, Rene; his sons, Jerry (Amanda) and Michael; his cherished grandchildren, Tyler, Olivia, Sophia, Paige, Healey, and Preston; his sisters, Agnes Hess and Gretchen Durand; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will carry his memory forward with love.
Paul will be privately laid to rest at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, in recognition of his service and sacrifice.
