Michael “Tony” VanWert, age 76, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family on June 18, 2026.
Born on March 12, 1950, Tony was raised in White Earth, Minnesota, and lived much of his life in St. Paul and Roseville. A proud member of the White Earth Nation, he was known for his intelligence, strong work ethic, and strong personality.
Over the years, Tony worked in a variety of fields. He served as President of the Upper Midwest American Indian Center (UMAIC), worked as a truck driver, and owned and operated an asphalt business. He was a hardworking man who took pride in providing for himself and his family.
A loving father, son, brother, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend, Tony will be remembered by those who knew and loved him.
Tony was preceded in death by his sister, Rosie; his brothers, Rick and Bruce; and many other beloved family members and loved ones.
He is survived by his daughter, Sarah Andersen (VanWert); his mother, Ona Richards; his brother, Paul Richards; his sister, Kadjii Richards; his grandsons, James and Jacob; and his granddaughter, Josephine, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
His family finds comfort in knowing that he is now at peace in the loving presence of God.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Mattson Funeral Home 343 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake, Minnesota and one hour prior to mass at the church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at the Church of Saint Peter, 1250 South Shore Drive, Forest Lake, Minnesota. Interment at Calvary Cemetery, Forest Lake, Minnesota.
May God grant him eternal rest and may perpetual light shine upon him.
