Maurine E. Gruening

February 6, 1927 — December 27, 2023

Wyoming

Maurine Elizabeth Gruening, a kind-hearted and compassionate soul, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2023, at the age of 96. She was born on February 6, 1927, in North Saint Paul, Minnesota, to Mr. and Mrs. August Korlin.

Maurine's journey in life was marked by her dedication to caring for others. After marrying her high school sweetheart, Elmer Gruening, they settled on Geranium Street in Saint Paul and began their remarkable fostering journey. Over the years, they opened their hearts and home to a remarkable 125 children, providing them with love, support, and stability. Three of these children became permanent members of the Gruening family.

Having cared for their family over the years, Maurine and Elmer made the decision to establish their home in Wyoming, Minnesota. They opted for Comfort Lake, a place where Maurine's father and brother had once overseen Korlin’s Resort. Surrounded by the allure of fishing, they found themselves embraced by the natural surroundings.

In addition to her nurturing role as a foster parent, Maurine broke through barriers in the workplace, rising to the position of supervisor at Control Data, leaving a lasting impact on her colleagues and the industry.

Outside of her professional life, Maurine found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She had a deep love for the outdoors and spent countless hours fishing, camping, and traveling. During the winters, she and Elmer sought solace in Arizona, enjoying the warmth and creating precious memories together. Maurine's playful spirit shone through as she engaged in friendly competition in card games, dominos, and bingo.

Maurine's presence will be deeply missed by her loved ones. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Elmer, her parents, her sister, Ruth, and her brother Leroy “Sonny” Korlin. She is survived by her cherished children, Ron (Gena) Gruening, Darlene (Jeff) Adamson, and Karla (Tim) Dietz, along with 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Her siblings, August "Butch" Korlin and Joanne Kladis, will hold her memory close to their hearts. Maurine also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of extended family and friends whose lives were touched by her warmth and kindness.

A memorial service to celebrate Maurine's life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 18, 2024 at Christ Lutheran Church, 2475 East 17th Avenue, North Saint Paul, Minnesota, honoring her beautiful legacy and the love she shared with all who knew her. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

In this time of sorrow, let us remember Maurine's compassionate spirit, her unwavering devotion to her family, and her enduring impact on those who were blessed to know her. May her soul find eternal peace, and may her memory forever be a source of comfort and inspiration to us all.
