Joel Warren Ericson

Joel went home to be with the Lord on Friday, December 15th at home, surrounded by his wife and children.

He was born on October 29th, 1954, to Ruth and Leon Ericson in Chicago, Illinois and spent most of his childhood in Western Springs, Illinois. Most of Joel’s summers were spent with his family at their cabin in Wisconsin. He had many fond memories of that time and as an adult he was most happy spending his days at that cabin with his own family and friends.

He loved reading, exploring the woods, hunting and fishing, and making things with his hands. He had many hobbies over the years– fly tying, wood working, photography, and others. Joel pursued lifelong learning and was knowledgeable about many things. When it came to words or obscure bits of information, he would always know the answer. He loved to play games with family and friends and was just a little bit competitive.

Joel married Kimberly Jean Phillips and over the last 35 years they raised two children: Kirsten and Wesley. Joel absolutely adored and loved his children beyond words and devoted his life to helping them, teaching them, and doing special things to bring them joy. When his granddaughters were born his love expanded exponentially and he was most proud with his role of “Grandpa”. He singlehandedly filled their libraries with new books at every visit, collected little treasures to make his special “jar of things” for them to look through, always took pride in their accomplishments, and treasured any art project they made for him.

Joel worked in the medical device industry over the last 40 years, which allowed him to travel all over the world. He really enjoyed his job and in recent years became a teacher in his area of expertise – quality assurance standards and certifications.

Joel was a dedicated member of Immanuel Church in Forest Lake for the last 23 years, leading men’s ministries, bible studies, and serving on the Deacon’s board.

Joel experienced many seasons of health struggles, yet his faith never wavered and his hope in the Lord never ceased. He spent time reading the old testament and found his strength through Psalm 91. Over the years he had a heart for others who struggled with health issues and would seek them out to pray with them and routinely encourage them on their journey.

Joel is survived by his wife, Kim; daughter Kirsten (Dillon), and son Wesley (Kaia), his 3 grandchildren; Grace & Emily and Juniper; brother, Tim (Vallie); and sisters, Noel (Bill), and Linsey (Bart); and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth & Leon Ericson, and one nephew, Nicholas White.

A celebration of life will be held at Immanuel Church in Forest Lake on Saturday, January 6th at 10:00. Memorials to Immanuel Church preferred.
