Helen Louise Pape (she would say “like paper without the “r”) age 81, of North Branch, MN, passed away on December 6, 2020 of complications due to COVID-19.
Helen was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 31, 1939. She was the daughter of Charles and Goldie (Maloy) Pape. Helen grew up in Sandoval and Centralia, IL, moving back to Chicago as a young adult where she married and raised her family before moving to Colorado (the place she loved best), California and then settling in Minnesota (another place she loved). Helen pursued many careers, retiring from The Federal Highway Administration in Denver, Colorado. She enjoyed the time with her coworkers and the gratification she felt navigating the intricacies of her final career.
Helen loved to travel; she had “itchy feet” especially for road trips around the western United States. Later in life she realized her dream and took a pilgrimage to Ireland accompanied by her sister Judy, fulfilling a lifelong ambition to connect with her Irish roots and heritage.
Helen cherished her beloved cat Whiskers, enjoyed a nice hot cup of coffee, frozen margaritas, a cold Guinness, boating on the lake, ice cream at the park, fried chicken, classical movies, the smell of white gardenias, The Scottish/Irish Festival in Estes Park, Colorado, the Rocky Mountains, holiday baking and spending time with her family. Helen loved her family deeply, oftentimes expressing it in her own unique ways. There are a myriad of memories connected to the diverse relationships she held with those in the sphere of her life.
Helen was welcomed into the arms of the Ancestors in Heaven this Christmas season. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Richard, his wife Barbara, and sister Judy.
Helen is survived, loved and missed by her five children: Kolleen White, Michele Terrill (James), William White (Sarah), Christine Brooks (Tim), Patricia Cold (Craig), along with 18 grandchildren, 19 great-grand children, numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
