Gretchen D. Selander

Gretchen Darlene Selander, age 84, of Chisago City, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at her home while surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.

Born on June 3, 1942, in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, Gretchen was the daughter of Doran and Marvel (Roberts) Adams. She was raised in White Bear Lake, where she attended White Bear Lake High School and built the foundation of the warm, outgoing personality that would remain with her throughout her life.

On August 20, 1975, Gretchen married the love of her life, Donald Selander. Introduced by a mutual friend, the two fell in love almost instantly, and from that moment forward they shared a life filled with laughter, adventure, and unwavering devotion. Together they made their home in Blaine, Minnesota, for more than twenty years before settling in Chisago City.

Gretchen found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She had a remarkable talent for sewing, crocheting, and a variety of crafts, creating handmade treasures that reflected both her creativity and her love for others. She especially enjoyed flower arranging, planting beautiful flowers, and shopping for just the right find. Traveling was one of her greatest passions. Their home in Florida became a cherished retreat, and in her younger years, Gretchen would often make the drive there herself, considering the journey part of the adventure. Every destination held a special memory, commemorated by the souvenir spoon she carefully added to her treasured collection, each one telling the story of another place explored and another adventure enjoyed. Gretchen also had a special place in her heart for animals and dearly loved her pets and grand-dogs, who brought her endless joy and companionship.

Those who knew Gretchen will remember her quick wit, lively conversations, and infectious sense of humor. She never met a stranger and had a remarkable way of making people feel welcome. Above all, she loved her family deeply and was always there for anyone who needed her. Strong-willed, wonderfully uncensored, and never afraid to speak her mind, Gretchen lived life authentically and wholeheartedly. Her fun-loving spirit, kind heart, and gift for storytelling left lasting impressions on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Gretchen was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Francis Scott; her son, David Selander; stepson, Douglas Selander; step-grandson, Dustin Selander; and her siblings, Danny, Joe, Dwayne, and Sandra.

She leaves behind the love of her life and devoted husband of nearly 51 years, Donald; her children, Lori (Ryan) Johnson, Donald (Arlene) Fleckner, and Daniel (Judy) Selander; grandchildren, Alicia (Patrick) Herbst, Lindsey Johnson, Ryan Johnson, Caleb Fleckner, Tyler Selander, and Samantha Selander; great-grandchildren, Dylan, Halley, Austin, Rilynn, Wyatt, Annistyn, and Mia; stepdaughter, Debra Syverson; daughter-in-law, Denise Selander; step-granddaughter, Shannon (Jason) Burmeister; step-great-grandchildren, Cayla and AJ; siblings, Ray Hoyt, David (Debbie) Adams, and Robert (Laurie) Scott; along with many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Though her family grieves her passing, they take comfort in the countless memories she created through her laughter, her adventurous spirit, and the love she so freely shared. Gretchen's legacy lives on in the lives she touched, the family she cherished, and the memories that will forever remind those who loved her of a life beautifully lived.

A celebration of Gretchen's life will begin at 3:00 p.m., Friday, August 7, 2026, at the Chisago Lakes Town Hall, 12400 316th Street, Lindstrom, Minnesota 55045.
