Galen Russell Krohn, age 85, of Forest Lake, MN, passed away on March 27, 2018, at Fairview Lakes Hospital in Wyoming, MN. He was a loving husband of 62 years, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Galen was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters and his son, Lloyd. He is survived by his wife Gloria, daughter Gail (Scott) Malinosky, daughter-in-law Karen Krohn, grandson Matthew (Julie) Malinosky, granddaughter Emily Malinosky and three great grandchildren Tony, Bethany and Tara; as well as in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Galen served in the Army during the Korean conflict in the Signal Corps stationed in Germany. He worked for the telephone company for 30 years, starting with Northwestern Bell and ending his career with Lucient Technologies. Galen also volunteered as a Firearms Safety Instructor for over 40 years. He enjoyed many hobbies and activities in life – camping, traveling (both around the US and internationally), rendezvousing (representing the 1840’s and even creating some of his own period clothing), woodworking, etching glasswork, scrimshaw, leatherwork and welding, as well as, wine and beer making.
He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed both hunting and fishing; and was a member of the Twin Cities Muzzloaders’ club for many years. He was also a volunteer for the MS Tram bike rides for many years, ringing bells of encouragement and handing out refreshments.
He could build, rebuild or repair nearly anything that was asked of him (including a few car engines and many utility trailers) and was always available to lend a helping hand or give advice. He enjoyed playing cards, particularly cribbage, and trips to the casino.
A memorial service will be held for Galen at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 5, at Mattson Funeral Home in Forest Lake, MN. Galen’s immediate family will be available to greet extended family and friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
