Dean Atkinson

October 14, 1933 — May 7, 2017

Dean Arden Atkinson passed away May 7, 2017 surrounded by loved ones at his bedside at the age of 83. Dean became an angel just one day before his beloved wife's birthday; they were able to celebrate in heaven together this year. Dean was born on October 14, 1933 in Langford, SD to Edward and Martena Atkinson. He met the love of his life Ruby at a café in Roseau, Minnesota and shortly thereafter they started their life together. After several moves due to Dean's career in trucking they settled down in Hugo, MN to raise their three kids and start A&B Construction. Dean was no stranger to hard work, he worked day and night to build a successful business and in 1986 built the home they would live the rest of their lives together in. Despite Dean's strong work ethic he did enjoy some leisure activities such as hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed many trips to Colorado to go elk hunting. Later on in life, he enjoyed taking longer trips in his motor home always with Ruby by his side. He could go on and on with stories on their adventures across the country. Dean also enjoyed watching his grandsons Mitch and Chet race, he was one of their biggest fans (next to Ruby:)). He loved taking the grandkids for four wheeler rides and always had a "one liner" to make everyone laugh. Dean was well known for his willingness to help anyone and everyone if they needed it. He was a well-respected business man with a kind heart. Dean was never shy about expressing his love for Ruby, and attributed all of his success in life to her....in his family's eyes it was the BOTH of them together that could conquer anything they set their minds to. Dean will forever be missed by all the people he touched during his life's journey. He is now in the arms of his "sweetheart", exactly where he has wanted to be since she left this Earth just over one year ago. Dean is survived by his children, Debbie (Randy) Wirtz, Darlene (Tony) Weiss and Michael Atkinson; grandchildren, Shannon Spychalla, Shane Wirtz, Brittany Viskoe, Mitch Weiss and Chet Atkinson; great grandchildren, Kaylie and Ashley Spychalla and Hannah Wirtz. He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 12, 2017 at Mattson Funeral Home, 343 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5:00-800 p.m., Thursday and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
