Carole A. Mathena, age 83, of Blaine, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2026.
Carole was born on February 28, 1942, in Baltimore, Maryland, to George and Madeline Helriegel. She was raised in a military family, with her father serving in the United States Army. Because of this, Carole spent much of her childhood traveling, a time she remembered fondly. She often shared stories of moving from place to place, especially her family’s time in Germany and the memorable boat journey that took them there.
Carole had a deep appreciation for learning and technology. She developed a strong love for computers, which became a significant part of her professional life. She worked in desktop publishing, creating user guides for colleges and attending many conventions along the way. Even after her formal career, she continued using her talents by designing church bulletins and newsletters—always happy to put her skills to good use.
In her quieter moments, Carole loved settling in with a good book, especially novels by her favorite author, Debbie Macomber. Family was at the heart of Carole’s life, and she treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren. After the passing of her beloved husband, Dave, Carole showed her independent and determined spirit by packing up her car—along with her stuffed animals—and making a road trip to Colorado to visit her sister, a journey she was very proud of.
Carole was preceded in death by her parents, George and Madeline; her husband, Dave; and her brothers, David Helriegel, Richard Helriegel, and Mike Helriegel.
She is survived by her sons, Steve Mathena and Brian (Melissa) Mathena; her grandchildren, Audrey (Stephan) and Holiday; her siblings, Judi Lutt, Bob (Anna) Helriegel, and Steve (Ann) Helriegel; along with many nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends who will miss her dearly.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM, on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at the Church of St. Timothy, 707 89th Ave NE, Blaine, MN 55434. Family will be greeting friends one hour prior to mass at the church. Burial at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
